Scottish Golf Clubs

The Royal Burgess Golfing Society is believed to be the oldest golf club in the world; starting at Bruntsfield Links in 1735 or thereabouts. It was followed in 1761 by the Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society. The world's first clubhouse, Golfhall, built 1717, played an important part in their formation.

Other golf clubs formed in the 18th Century include the Honourable Co of Edinburgh Golfers (1744), authors of the world's first Rules; the Royal & Ancient in St Andrews (1754); and the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club (1774). Only the R&A still plays its original course; all the others have moved.
